Music!!!

Music has been on my mind alot lately. The other night we had the awesome opportunity to hear the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra play. They came out to Allendale to play with our Middle School and High School bands. They do this for only a few schools each year so we were one of the privileged ones this year. I love classical music but can't go to the Symphony often because (of course) it is priced out of our price range!

Listening to the music the other night got me thinking about how wonderful our God is, that he created music! He loves music and knows how music effects us! Music can bring on so many moods or calm us!

The Psalms are a great picture of that! Throughout the Bible they are songs that have been sung, like Miriam's song, Mary's song and more, but the Psalms are like a hymnal in places. It says 56 times at the beginning of certain chapters "to the director of music". Do you wonder how the Director of Music put the particular songs to music? I do. Who sang the songs that were written? I know that the Psalms bring much joy, peace and comfort to my soul, just like music does!

Yesterday in church during our prayer time I read this Psalm: (the parts that stuck out to me bigger)

Psalm 144
Of David.
1 Praise be to the LORD my Rock,
who trains my hands for war,
my fingers for battle.
2 He is my loving God and my fortress,
my stronghold and my deliverer,
my shield, in whom I take refuge,
who subdues peoples under me.
3 O LORD, what is man that you care for him,
the son of man that you think of him?
4 Man is like a breath;
his days are like a fleeting shadow.
5 Part your heavens, O LORD, and come down;
touch the mountains, so that they smoke.
6 Send forth lightning and scatter {the enemies};
shoot your arrows and rout them.
7 Reach down your hand from on high;
deliver me and rescue me
from the mighty waters,
from the hands of foreigners
8 whose mouths are full of lies,
whose right hands are deceitful.
9 I will sing a new song to you, O God;
on the ten-stringed lyre I will make music to you,
10 to the One who gives victory to kings,
who delivers his servant David from the deadly sword.
11 Deliver me and rescue me
from the hands of foreigners
whose mouths are full of lies,
whose right hands are deceitful.
12 Then our sons in their youth
will be like well-nurtured plants,
and our daughters will be like pillars
carved to adorn a palace.
13 Our barns will be filled
with every kind of provision.
Our sheep will increase by thousands,
by tens of thousands in our fields;
14 our oxen will draw heavy loads.
There will be no breaching of walls,
no going into captivity,
no cry of distress in our streets.
15 Blessed are the people of whom this is true;
blessed are the people whose God is the LORD.
This has been a hard week, and I love how God showed me again that HE is all I need! Thank you Jesus!!!
Just in case you want to watch them, here is a video of my son's class playing, then one of the Symphony. (oops it wouldn't upload my symphony video, if you want to see it, it's on my facebook. It's a wonderful song!)

Kim, I'm so glad you posted that Psalm. I'll never forget a couple years ago, I was going through a really hard time. In the middle of the night I couldn't sleep so I started reading my Bible. When I opened it- it landed on that Psalm and oh how God spoke to me through those verses.
It's one of my very favorite passages.
